Ask better placement questions

A placement is easier to support when the important questions are answered before the first access request. Use this list as a conversation starter, not as a substitute for the specific agreement.

Questions about fit

Ask what the student will do, what they will learn, and what evidence will show progress. Compare those answers with the programme's requirements and the public listing.

If the work is remote or hybrid, ask how communication, supervision, and access will work in practice.

  • What is the first deliverable?
  • What skills are helpful, and what can be learned?
  • Who reviews the work and how often?

Questions about safety and continuity

Ask who owns the systems and data, what the student is authorised to access, and where a concern is reported. Confirm what happens if the project or supervision changes.

The aim is not to remove all uncertainty; it is to give the student and supervisors a clear way to respond when uncertainty appears.

  • Which data may be handled, and how is it retained?
  • Who can pause or change the work safely?
